For years, Clayton Potter's been friends and workout partners with Ronnie. Though Clay is attracted, he's never come on to Ronnie because, let's face it, Ronnie only dates women.

When Clay's father suffers a heart attack, Ronnie, having recently lost his dad, springs into action, driving Clay to the hospital over 100 miles away. To stay close to Clay's father, the men share a hotel room near the hospital, but after an emotional day, one thing leads to another, and straight-as-an-arrow Ronnie makes a proposal that knocks Clay's socks off! Just a little something to take the edge off.

Clay responds in a way he's never considered. After an amazing night together, Clay expects Ronnie to ignore what happened between them and go back to his old life. Ronnie surprises him and seems interested in additional exploration. Though they're friends, Clay suddenly finds it hard to accept the new Ronnie and suspects that Ronnie will return to his old ways. Maybe they both have a thing or two to learn.

I finished the book, not because I was so enthralled that I couldn't put it down, but because it was so bad I just couldn't look away. There are so many believable ways that the relationship between these two men could have started. Instead, it began in the most unbelievable way I've ever read. Many other reviewers have mentioned that, so I won't go into details, but suffice it to say that my suspension of disbelief at the beginning of this book was already pegged at eye-roll level. The author had a lot of work to do in order to get me back on his side. Unfortunately, that never happened.

Clay is a gay know-it-all jerk who has sex with his very straight best friend and tells him that what they have is "just sex." Then he throws a hissy fit when Ronnie (ugh, I hate that name), treats their relationship accordingly. Understandably, Ronnie is confused, as are we all, because I can't for the life of me understand why Clay would even like this idiot, let alone fall in love with him. We're told that Ronnie is funny and intelligent, but I found zero proof of either of those things. And they both had mood swings that took corners faster than Ronnie's lambo. One minute they're hugging and saying they'll always be there for each other and the next they're telling each other to F*** off. Good thing books can't give you whiplash or I'd be in a neck brace right now.

Character issues aside, the plot was a mess. The whole illness with the father was so contrived. I could almost hear the author thinking about the worst thing that could happen, but could be "fixed" easily enough to free Clay up to go back to having "just sex" with Ronnie. I also have no idea why we even needed the big secret that Ronnie remembers after having "mind-blowing" sex with Clay. It was there and gone with only a few tears and a couple of conversations.

And don't even get me started about the ridiculous, cheesy things that Clay said to Ronnie while edging him, every single time they had sex. *face palm* Seriously. Who says that kind of stuff?

The only good things about this book are that I don't really remember finding any grammar issues and the sex scenes were okay as long as you ignored everything that came out of Clay's mouth. However, cheesy dialogue, contrived plot points, moody characters, and ridiculous sex talk outweigh the good. If you're bored, I suppose there are worse books you could read. Needless to say, I won't be giving this author another try.

Eyes Only for Me (Audible Audio Edition) Andrew Grey Tristan James Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

Clay, 40, has loved Ronnie for a long time, but Ronnie, 40, is straight. They've been best friends and have a small group of friends who they hang out with. Ronnie is super successful, and always has women who want something from him. Clay is out and proud, but lonely since his break up. He wants what everyone wants, to love and be loved, forever. When Clays Dad gets sick, Ronnie drops everything to help him get to his Dad. He stays, and is strong for Clay, like Clay was for him when his Dad died. Knowing Ronnie is straight, doesn't stop Clay from coming on to Ronnie and giving him a BJ. A whole new set of feelings are unlocked, but Ronnie is too stunned to know what to do. He liked it. Then the story meanders through the self discovery, and more sexy episodes, leaving Clay wondering what he's done. The last thing he wants is to lose a friendship. Both men are angst laden, and Ronnie wants more sex, but only as bed buddies, so no one knows, and Clay knows this is going to crush his heart, because he is "in love" with Ronnie.
I thought Ronnie was an ass, and devoid of true feelings. Clay has such a solid heart that is getting bruised. It seemed mostly one sided with Clay being the grown up, and Ronnie just being juvenile. I didn't feel the guys had a true connection, and were just going through the motions. It seemed superficial with Ronnie.
So, Ronnie realizes he likes Clay, too, but still likes women. If it was just sex for Ronnie, then Clay has been a fool.
Ronnie slowly gets some emotion, but seems hollow. Not a favorite book for me, even though I love Andrew Grey's stories, usually.
It seemed
People are split on this one, sooooo.
========================
This one combines a lot of the great qualities of an Andrew Grey novel--terrific writing, fast-moving sub-plots, complicated characters, terrific sex, and as he has tackled in the past, gay-for-you. I read it in half a day. That's despite the fact that

1) Ronnie is too self-centered, too otherwise preoccupied, too old to still be like that;

2) Clay is just a bit too good for him in every respect, demonstrated constantly because he is the narrator and we are really into his head;;

3) The coterie of friends--Jerry, Bobby and Phillip--were blank slates (maybe not Phillip, the only gay one in that trio, possible sequel MC);

4) There were too many coincidences in the subplots, especially involving Ronnie and Clay's fathers and mothers.

Here you have two OMG-I'm-40-crisis men who could not be more opposite in personality and apparent sexual orientation still acting like best-bro frat boys (who is who on the cover? neither is physically described though I would think Ronnie is the one in the suit).

Clay is beyond being besotted with Ronnie, and everyone knows that except Ronnie who from the beginning of the book until the epilogue is the least sympathetic G4Y character I have encountered, especially in a work by this esteemed author.

I gave it four stars because it is laced with passages that everyone should read when it comes to trying to get into the minds and hearts of middle-aged American men who have never faced the realities they should have until it's almost too late to care. And the sex (while I have some doubts about how a man like Ronnie can flip so readily) is really, really amazing.
